Summary

  • All organisms need food in order to survive. Philip the fox next to a bin. He says tasty.

  • Once eaten, food reacts with oxygen to release energy (as well as water and CO2). This energy is used to keep cells working (and alive!). Food + O2 form water + CO2 This reaction is known as respiration, and is the reason we eat and breathe. You'll learn more about it in biology!

  • The energy of food is measured in kilojoules (kJ), or (kilo)calories (kcal). These can be found on food labels! A label from a food packet. An arrow points at the 'energy' section, which shows the energy of the food in kJ and kcal. • 1 kJ = 1000 J
    • 1 kcal = 4200 J
